Maiyan and Vatna Ceremony

Maiyan Ceremony

After the engagement takes place the Bride and Groom are confined to their homes until the day of the wedding – usually for one day. This usually happens a few days before the marriage day by the parents and relatives who gather at the respective homes. The married female relatives sing specific songs to wish the couple a happy and long marriage.

Vatna Ceremony

As the songs are sung a yellow paste mixture made of tumeric, gram flour, and mustard oil is rubbed on the arms, legs, face and body whilst they sit on a patri. This is thought to beatify them for the wedding and it symbolises leaving the single life behind in favour of a new married life together.

Maiyan signals the beginning of the confinement and the ladies of the house sing songs to the beat of the dholkis (drums).
