Recently I had the pleasure of photographing a vatna ceremony, this is where the couple’s families rub yellow tumeric paste onto their legs, face and arms while they sit on a patri (a special red board decorated with embroidery). This ceremony usually takes place the day before the wedding, the purpose is to cleanse and balance the body ready for marriage. It was a lovely sunny day and the colours were just amazing.

One of my favourite parts of the day was watching the Rangoli being created. Rangoli is made of brightly coloured rice and powders such as paprika. The designs are passed down through generations. In the Vatna ceremony there is always rangoli in front of where the groom/bride is sitting. At the end of the ceremony the mother will clean the rangoli, mix it with water and put it on the front walls of the house. Indians say the longer it lasts, the more love a mother has for her son or daughter!

It was a great day, here’s a few more pics
